South Carolina was a critical battleground in the American Revolution, producing more than 20,000 rank-and-file soldiers and an array of legendary partisan leaders who used guerrilla tactics to defeat the British.
Francis Marion: Known as the "Swamp Fox," he pioneered hit-and-run guerrilla warfare in the Lowcountry swamps.
Thomas Sumter: Nicknamed the "Fighting Gamecock" for his fierce tactics, he led fierce backcountry militia resistance.
Andrew Pickens: Known as the "Wizard Owl," he was a vital Upstate militia leader who fought decisively at Cowpens.
William Moultrie: Successfully defended Charleston at the Battle of Sullivan's Island, where Fort Moultrie is named in his honor.
Christopher Gadsden: A principal political leader, head of the SC Sons of Liberty, and creator of the iconic "Don't Tread on Me" Gadsden Flag.
Henry Laurens: A wealthy merchant who became President of the Continental Congress and an integral political diplomat.
Thomas Heyward Jr.: A Signer of the Declaration of Independence who also fought actively as a militia soldier and was captured by the British.]
William Bratton: A key militia commander who famously defeated a Tory force at the Battle of Huck's Defeat.
Isaac Hayne: A militia officer executed by the British in Charleston, becoming a prominent martyr for the Patriot cause.
Hezekiah Maham: A cavalry lieutenant colonel who invented the "Maham Tower," a wooden siege structure used to capture British outposts.
Oscar Marion: An enslaved personal aide and sub-officer to Francis Marion who fought alongside him throughout the war.
Peter Harris: A warrior of the Catawba Indian Nation who served in the South Carolina militia to secure tribal independence.
Kate Barry: An Upstate scout who famously rounded up local militia forces to support General Daniel Morgan before the Battle of Cowpens.
Rebecca Motte: A wealthy widow who famously aided Patriots in burning down her own mansion to force the surrender of the occupying British garrison
Francis Salvador: The first Jewish person elected to a colonial assembly in the Americas, who was killed early in the war while defending the SC frontier.
